The following Departments were present: Black Forest Fire-Rescue, Boulder Rural FPD, Durango Fire, Elk Creek FD, Evans Fire, Grand Valley FPD, Indian Hills Fire/Rescue, Los Pinos FD, Montrose FD, Mt. View FPD, North Washington FPD, Oak Creek Fire, Public Safety Fin. Grp., and Steamboat Springs FD. Fire Chief Bob Pistor, Montrose Fire Department welcomed us to Montrose and reminded us that the rain was a small payback for all the snowy roads he has experienced on his trips to the Front Range. The Montrose Fire Department is experiencing rapid growth within the 184 square miles that they protect. They currently have ten career members staffing two stations that respond to approximately 3,000 calls annually. They provide ALS Transport and auto aid to the Montrose Airport FD. They have three Class A pumpers, one tender and another on order, two brush trucks and five ambulances. A new Station 3 is on the drawing board as heavy commercial growth continues to develop. All of this is accomplished with a budget of 4.9 million dollars. Chief Bob does a great job of organizing and managing his Department with some real strong challenges ahead of him. Chief Jim Notary, North Washington FPD, presented a program on FPPA Retirement Benefits and Programs with Barbara Johnson and Barbara Greer, FPPA Representatives. The Fire Police Pension Association was created by the State in 1985 to take over prior defunct systems to provide benefits to our firefighters and police officers. It is governed by a nine member Board appointed by the Governor. All investing is done by outside unaffiliated professional investment firms. The average return on investments since conception has been 11%. Public Pension vs. Social Security Offsets were discussed. Federal and State Benefits for LODD and disability were reviewed. FPPA has a tuition assistance program for LODD family members. The Death and Disability Plan was discussed at length. The 457 Deferred Compensation Plan was reviewed. A Statewide Defined Benefit Plan covered in great detail the various retirement plans and options available. Make sure you maintain accurate and updated Beneficiary Information at all times. The annual COLA is being reviewed and may soon go above 3%. The Deferred Retirement Option Plan, DROP, discussion had a great amount of interest. Please contact either Barbara at the FPPA at 303-770-3772 for additional information. Chief Notary along with Chief Greg Sheehan, Retired Thornton, and Ken Armstong, Retired North Washington termed up to present a panel discussion on retirement options and outcomes. Be aware of tax ramifications on sick and vacation buyouts. Fully utilize retirement planning work sheets and financial and planning guidelines before finalizing your exit. Be aware of Financial Advisors who want to help you. Prepare after retirement health insurance plans. Make sure you are fully comfortable with all the facts and answers prior to making final decisions. Be able to answer the question, Am I really ready to retire? as you approach your decision. Be aware of the unknown real effects that prolonged stress has on you as a Chief Officer. You never really leave your job at the office! Most importantly, remember to start talking with the FPPA Representative at least one year prior to your planned retirement to maximize your potential benefits. We want to extend our thanks and appreciation to Chief Pistor and his Department for arranging the fine hotel accommodations and meeting faculties at the Holiday Inn Express. The Thursday night BBQ was a great opportunity for us all to share stories and good times and enjoy some great food. Many thanks, Chief Bob, for all your efforts to make us feel at home. REMINDER: OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 2008 AT 1000 AT THE BLACK FOREST FPD.
