As a recent academy graduate, I am asking your help in developing a paid part-time program at Mountain View Fire District in Longmont, Colorado. By taking a short survey, you will help us construct the program in a manner that is most advantageous to firefighters like yourself. I will also say that the survey results will be used to contribute to a National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program research paper; and therefore, should contribute to the available body of fire service knowledge. Our working theory is that there potentially exists an under-tapped market of graduate firefighters (IFSAC FFI and/or FFI&FFII, EMTB) from non-affiliated academies that, upon graduation, do not have firm job offers from a career department and will be looking for a position. Mountain Views hope is to potentially build a symbiotic relationship with its PP-TFP participants where the District gets supplemental help to bring our units to a safer staffing level, and part-time firefighters gain experience and training that may enhance their resume for their career job search. In contemplating the program, I have spent considerable time considering what Mountain View has to offer a developing firefighter. The primary benefits are fourfold: 1) An outstanding Training Section that I would match against any; 2) An EMS/Medical Direction system that is outstanding; 3) A dedicated, extremely competent corps of line firefighters that would gladly engage in new FF development; and, 4) A forward-looking attitude by the Command Staff to consider cutting edge solutions to real problems. There are much less desirable places/circumstances to perform the work that one loves than on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. As a recent transplant from Austin, TX, I have to report that this whole state is one big playground (if you like the out-of-doors)!
